To activate your AirTalk Wireless phone, put the AirTalk SIM card in, switch the phone on, and follow any setup prompts. Then call or text someone to confirm your service is working. Turn off Wi-Fi before that test so you know the phone is using AirTalk’s cell service and not your home internet.
Using your own phone, an eSIM, or keeping your old number? Those take a few extra steps. This guide walks you through each one, plus simple fixes if something goes wrong. If your phone is from a different Lifeline company, our government phone activation guide covers other carriers.
Which Activation Method Do You Need?
| Your situation | What you’ll do | Jump to |
|---|---|---|
| AirTalk mailed you a new phone and SIM card | Insert the SIM, turn the phone on, and test it | Method 1 |
| You have an AirTalk SIM for a phone you already own | Check your phone, activate the SIM, and insert it | Method 2 |
| AirTalk sent you an eSIM QR code | Scan the code in your phone’s settings | Method 3 |
| You want to keep your current phone number | Send a port-in request, then activate | Method 4 |
Before You Start: What You’ll Need
Having these ready makes activation faster:
- An approved application. AirTalk ships your phone and SIM card after your application is approved. AirTalk says approval often takes 20 to 30 minutes, though it can stretch to 3 or 4 days if your documents need another look. Not sure where you stand? Here’s how to check your AirTalk application status.
- Your AirTalk package. Keep the box and the plastic card your SIM came on. Your SIM card number is printed on the SIM itself and included in your package.
- AirTalk’s emails and texts. These can include your tracking number and an activation number, so check your spam or junk folder too.
- Wi-Fi. It helps you finish phone setup, and you’ll need it for an eSIM or the iPhone data profile.
- A charged phone.
- Using your own phone? It must be unlocked and compatible (see Method 2).
- Keeping your number? You’ll need your current carrier’s account number and PIN (see Method 4).
Method 1: Activate a New AirTalk Phone That Came in the Mail
- Charge the phone. Unbox it and let it charge for a while. The SIM card may already be inside, or it may be packed separately.
- Insert the SIM card (if needed). Turn the phone off. Find the small SIM tray, usually on the side or top edge. Gently push the SIM tool (or a straightened paperclip) into the tiny hole to pop the tray out. Line up the SIM’s cut corner with the tray — it only fits one way — and slide the tray back in.
- Turn the phone on and finish setup. Connect to Wi-Fi and follow the screens. You can sign in to or create a Google account (Android) or an Apple Account, formerly Apple ID (iPhone), or skip it for now. Write down that email and password and keep them safe. If you ever reset the phone, you’ll need them to get back in.
- Enter your activation number if asked. If the phone asks for an activation number, you’ll find it in your AirTalk box or in the activation email AirTalk sent you.
- Wait for signal bars. This can take a few minutes. If no bars appear, restart the phone once.
- Test your service with Wi-Fi off.
- Call a friend or family member (never test by calling 911).
- Send a text message.
- Open a website to check your mobile data.
- Accept any updates. On an iPhone, if a carrier settings update pop-up appears, tap Update. On Android, install any system updates.
If calls and texts work but the internet doesn’t, use the APN fix in the troubleshooting section below.
Method 2: Activate an AirTalk SIM Card in Your Own Phone (BYOD)
With “bring your own device” (BYOD), you keep the phone you already have and add an AirTalk SIM. AirTalk’s BYOD option still comes with a free SIM card and a mobile plan. Our guide to bringing your own phone to Lifeline explains how this works across providers.
Step 1: Check That Your Phone Will Work
AirTalk requires your phone to be unlocked to work on its network. Here’s how to check:
- Find your IMEI. Dial *#06# on your phone’s keypad to see its IMEI. You can also find it in Settings under About (iPhone: General > About). Enter it in AirTalk’s BYOD compatibility checker.
- iPhone unlock check: Go to Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. If you see No SIM restrictions, your iPhone is unlocked.
- Android unlock check: Menu names vary. On many models, open Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network operators and turn off automatic selection. If several networks show up, the phone is probably unlocked. If only one shows up, it’s probably locked.
AirTalk notes that its checker can’t guarantee every feature — like calls, texts, picture messages, and data — will work on your phone. Very old phones may also have trouble on today’s 4G and 5G networks.
Step 2: Activate Your SIM Number Online (If Your Instructions Say To)
- Go to AirTalk’s activation page.
- Enter your SIM card number. It’s long, so check each digit.
- Follow the screens, which take you through confirming your plan, choosing your device, verifying your identity, giving consent, and submitting. Type your details exactly as they appear on your application and ID.
- Watch for a confirmation message telling you the SIM is active.
Step 3: Insert the SIM and Test
Turn the phone off, insert the SIM (see Method 1, Step 2), and turn it back on. Then run the same Wi-Fi-off test: a call, a text, and a website. If your phone says SIM not supported, it’s usually still locked to another carrier.
Method 3: Activate an AirTalk eSIM
An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone, so there’s no card to insert. AirTalk sets it up with a QR code that you scan.
- Check your phone. It needs to support eSIM and be unlocked. Most newer iPhones and many newer Android phones support eSIM.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. A strong internet connection helps setup go smoothly.
- Find your QR code. Once you’re approved, AirTalk sends your personal QR code by email or text. Open it on a second screen, like a computer or someone else’s phone, or print it. You’ll scan it with the phone you’re setting up.
- Add the eSIM.
- iPhone: Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Service) > Add eSIM, then choose the QR code option.Android: Settings > Connections (or Network & internet) > SIM manager (or SIMs), then choose to add an eSIM.
- Pick AirTalk as your main line. If your phone has two lines, choose AirTalk for calls, texts, and mobile data.
- Test it with Wi-Fi off.
Don’t delete your AirTalk eSIM after it’s installed. Most eSIM QR codes only work once, so you’d likely need a new code from AirTalk.
Method 4: Keep Your Current Phone Number (Port-In)
Moving your number to AirTalk is called “porting in.” Don’t cancel your old service first. Your number has to stay active, and any port protection or restrictions on the account must be turned off.
- Get your transfer details. Ask your current carrier for your account number and PIN.
- Send your request. Sign in to your AirTalk account and fill out the port-in request form. Check every detail twice, since mistakes can slow things down. Start on AirTalk’s Port-In page.
- Wait for the transfer. Your service may pause for a short time while the number moves. airtalkwireless
- Activate your SIM. Enter your port-in number and follow the prompts until you get a confirmation. Do this on AirTalk’s Active Port-In page.
Switching from another Lifeline company? Your new company needs your full name, date of birth, the last four digits of your Social Security number (or your Tribal ID number), your address, your phone number, and your consent. Once the transfer is complete, your benefit with the old company ends. In most cases, your service keeps working during the switch. For the full process, see our guides on keeping your number when you switch and how to switch Lifeline providers.

AirTalk Activation Not Working? Here’s How to Fix It
Start simple. AirTalk suggests restarting your phone or turning airplane mode on and back off. Also make sure mobile data is on and the SIM tray is pushed in all the way.
| What you see | What it usually means | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| No SIM or Insert SIM | The SIM isn’t seated correctly | Turn the phone off, reinsert the SIM, and restart |
| SIM not supported or SIM locked | The phone is locked to another carrier | Ask the carrier that sold the phone to unlock it, or use an AirTalk phone |
| Calls and texts work, but no internet | Data (APN) settings need updating | Follow the APN steps below |
| No Service or Searching | Weak signal, service not active yet, or an older phone | Toggle airplane mode, restart, and check AirTalk’s coverage map |
| Activation page won’t accept your SIM number | A typo, or your order is still processing | Re-enter the number slowly, make sure you’re on airtalkwireless.com, then contact support |
| Number transfer is stuck | Wrong account number or PIN, or port protection is on | Confirm details with your old carrier and update your request |
| eSIM QR code won’t scan | No Wi-Fi, a locked phone, or a used code | Connect to Wi-Fi, check the phone is unlocked, and ask AirTalk for a new code |
| Phone worked, then stopped | Service wasn’t used for 30 days, or recertification was missed | Use your phone right away, recertify if needed, and call AirTalk |
Fix Mobile Data with AirTalk’s APN Settings
APN stands for Access Point Name. These settings tell your phone how to reach AirTalk’s mobile internet. If you move your AirTalk SIM into a different phone, you may need to reset them.
On an iPhone: Connect to Wi-Fi, then download AirTalk’s APN profile from its setup page (if you’re viewing the page on another device, scan the QR code there instead). Tap Allow, then Close. Open Settings, tap Profile Downloaded, and tap Install. Your mobile data should then be ready. Use AirTalk’s APN setup page.
On an Android phone: The same page has separate instructions for Android devices. On most Android phones, the APN menu is under Settings > Connections (or Network & internet) > Mobile networks > Access Point Names. Enter the settings exactly as AirTalk lists them, save, and restart.

How to Keep Your AirTalk Service Active
- Use your phone at least once every 30 days. If you go 30 days without using free Lifeline service, your provider must warn you, and you’ll have 15 days to use it before you’re removed from the program. Making a call, using data, sending a text, answering a call from someone other than your provider, buying extra minutes or data, or telling your provider you want to keep service all count. See USAC’s usage rules.
- Recertify every year. Once a year, USAC (or your state, if you live in Oregon or Texas) confirms you still qualify. Miss the deadline, and you can lose your benefit. Our Lifeline recertification guide walks you through it.
- Stay alert for scams. AirTalk has warned customers about fake websites and agents using its name. Only activate on airtalkwireless.com. If someone contacts you out of the blue asking for money to “activate” your free service, hang up and call AirTalk using the numbers on its official website. Our Lifeline scam alert covers other warning signs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most of the wait is for delivery. AirTalk’s own delivery estimates after approval range from 3–7 business days to 7–10 business days. Once your phone or SIM arrives, AirTalk describes activation as a simple, quick process. Moving an old number can take longer, and your service may pause briefly during the transfer.
No. AirTalk states there’s no charge to activate its Lifeline service and no monthly bill for it. The Lifeline benefit, up to $9.25 a month or up to $34.25 on qualifying Tribal lands, goes toward your service. The government doesn’t pay for phones, though. AirTalk’s free or lower-cost phones, upgrades, and top-ups are its own promotions with their own terms. Learn more in our AirTalk free government phone guide and our guide to free cell phones with no deposit or activation fee.
Look on the SIM card itself or in your AirTalk package. It’s a long string of digits, usually also printed on the plastic card your SIM snapped out of. Keep that card until your phone is fully working.
Yes, as long as the new phone is unlocked and compatible. Move the SIM over, and if data doesn’t connect, reset the APN settings. Run the new phone’s IMEI through AirTalk’s BYOD checker first.
They’re related, but they’re not the same service. AirTalk and AirVoice share a parent company, and free Lifeline service goes through AirTalk. AirVoice mainly sells paid prepaid plans. To activate free Lifeline service, use AirTalk’s website.
AirTalk sends a tracking number by email or text once your order ships, so check your inbox and spam folder. If it’s taking longer than expected, use AirTalk’s Check Status tool. Some applications take a few extra days when documents need to be reviewed again. If your order still seems stuck, contact AirTalk support.
